Mtende Community Project

Project to build bridges over rivers which are dangerous in the rainy season.

A large number of people have to cross the river from the area of Ng’ongo to reach the Ekwendeni trading centre for the hospital, shops and schools.  There is no bridge over the river and in the rainy season men have to go into the river and carry the children across to get to school. Since 2010, 7 children have drowned in this river.

A charity called The Raven Trust have built several bridges in the north of Malawi and I have shown before and after photos below of the kind of bridges which were built there.

We have received plans and an estimate of cost from a reputable local civil engineering company Kathabwa Civil Works & Building Contractors to build a bridge over this river at a cost of £5500. It will be made from concrete and steel.
