Isn’t it the case that whenever we lose something we try mentally to re-trace our steps to jog our memory?
It happens too sometimes that we walk into a room and forget why we came in in the first place and then there’s the ‘what was I going to say…..’ You’ll know what I’m talking about as it happens to us all.
Now, where was I?….. ah yes. Forgetting and finding is what ‘I’m on’ about today. Everyone has at one time or another lost something and my guess is that most folk will have found something too. Finding and losing things are all part of life’s adventure.
The intensity or otherwise of our searching usually depends on its value. Some items have little monetary value but priceless sentimental value and people will often go to great lengths to recover their missing treasures.
I remember seeing in a large department store a sign which read ‘lost children’. I wondered whether it should have read ‘lost parents’. Who lost who? In any case at the reunion of parent and child, there’s always a mixture of relief and ‘What have I told you about…….’
As far as memory is concerned even Professor Sigmund Freud, the renowned psychoanalyst, ‘forgot things’ and wrote a book about his experiences. He came up with an amazing and memorable title and called it, ‘Forgetting Things’.
Jesus told the parable of the ‘lost coin’, one of a trilogy of parables with the same theme. The lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. The point of this threefold teaching is clear and I don’t think it needs much explanation except perhaps a brief word about the coin itself.
The coin, probably a drachma and equal to a days pay, could have been one of ten coins worn in the form of a bracelet as a dowry. It has been suggested as another possibility that it was part of the family savings or wages. Given that the coin belonged to a poor woman in all probability, it was no wonder that she searched until she found it.
I have singled out today’s reading from Luke as part of the trilogy but perhaps you might want to read the three parables together.
Jesus said that he came to ‘Seek and save that which was lost’
Today I ask you to think/meditate on these things.

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
